Title Search
A review of FAA registry and lien records to confirm aircraft ownership and identify any encumbrances before purchase.
Definition
Aircraft title in the United States is tracked by the FAA Civil Aviation Registry. A title search involves reviewing FAA records to confirm the seller is the registered owner, identify any recorded liens (such as loans secured by the aircraft), and surface any legal encumbrances that could complicate the sale. Title searches are typically performed by specialized aviation title and escrow companies.
Why it matters in a transaction
Purchasing an aircraft with an undisclosed lien means the buyer could inherit the seller's debt obligation, or the lienholding lender could repossess the aircraft. A title search is the standard way to confirm clean title before closing. Without it, you are taking on unknown financial and legal risk.
What TailExchange can help you see
TailExchange links to FAA registry data where available, showing the registered owner on file. This can help you confirm the seller matches FAA records, but it does not reflect lien status or the completeness of the title chain.
What TailExchange cannot verify or replace
TailExchange cannot perform a title search, provide a title opinion, or guarantee clear title. For title confirmation, use an aviation title company — the same firms that typically handle aircraft escrow. AOPA and other aviation associations maintain directories of title service providers.
